This character was originally written as a combination of mouth (here signifying circle) and 鼎 a character meaning “round three-legged kettle.”  The original meaning was “round kettle,” and the meaning of “member” are thought to have come from “people gathered around in a meeting.” In its current form, it can be though of as a combination of 口 mouth and shell/money.
