This character was formerly written 條, which is a combination of 攸 an element depicting “hand striking person with a stick” (which also apparently means "relaxed") and tree. This gave “wooden stick/branch for striking,” and eventually led to the idea of something straight (which itself led to the figurative meaning of “line of argument”), as well as “something small broken off from the main part (which led to connotations of “small part” and “item/detail.” In its current form, 攸 has been simplified to 夂 the winter radical.
