This character is a combination of 尸 a non-general use character meaning “corpse,” here representing the image of a slumped figure that it derived from (indicating “sitting”), 衣 a character meaning “clothes,” and the middle section, which is derived from four 工 shapes, indicating weights. 展 originally indicated “sitting heavily on a piece of cloth as it is being spread out,” and eventually came to mean “spread” and “display” in a broader sense.
