This character is a combination of 亻 the human radical and 也 a character now used to mean “to be” that originally meant a “twisted creature.” Together they express the idea of an “unusual/strange person” which gives “stranger” or “person from another country.” Eventually it came to mean other in general.

This character can also be read ほか (hoka). This is its kun’yomi, or native Japanese reading.
