Old forms of this character show that it is a combination of a symbol and pictograph, expressing a “weaving shuttle being pushed to one side.” This came to represent “doing one action as part of a sequence,” or doing something “prior” to the next action. The idea of acting in advance led to the meaning of “already” or “beforehand.”
